Johanna, founder of DeKors, is a national and internationally renowned Interior Designer with business roots in the Bay Area since 1973. She is German born and a graduate of the University of Munich, Germany, with a degree in Architecture and Interior Design. She spent two years as an exchange student in UC Berkeley, Calif. She obtained her California State contractor’s license in 1980. She taught Practical Design at California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC), Oakland, CA, enhancing Kaufman’s Architectural Design classes in practical design.
Johanna started De Kors Custom Shutters and Interiors in Oakland, Calif. in 1971, opening her first shop on Broadway and later moving to Grand Ave. in 1976, were she has maintained her store for the past 40 years. Services are provided for residential, commercial, and high-rise markets. With a commercial contractor’s license, she is in a position to not only provide interior design services, but also interior remodeling services, based on her consultation and designs. Today, Johanna is now serving her “loyal clientele” of more than 45 years, satisfying the “2nd and some 3rd generations” of many of her original clientele.
In addition to extensive Commercial & Residential Interior Design services, which are custom tailored to suit the specific tastes of her clientele, Johanna offers a complete line of Window Treatments --- Shutters (our Specialty), Blinds, Shades, & Draperies. She also provides a full in-house installation service -- from a team working exclusively for DeKors for over 40 years. Her more than 45 years of direct hands-on experience with most of the major home furnishing manufacturers, both in the US and Europe, enables her to provide an exhilarating design complementing her client’s tastes.
A large majority of Johanna’s clients have a working relationship with her for many years, most considering her “part of the family” and whenever they or their children relocate, she “moves along with them”--- creating interiors and custom window coverings to meet their taste and enhancing their new home.
Johanna has done work in many parts of the globe. Being European and multi-lingual, she does not hesitate to take on jobs across the “pond”, having worked in many parts of Central Europe, Egypt, and Australia. Johanna has also performed work in South America, where she resided for eight years in Argentina.

Having raised three children, Johanna is very budget oriented, and no job---- residential or commercial is too small or large. Our service shop refinishes, restores, and/or repairs sun-faded, weathered, worn, damaged, or “just old” shutters to “like new” condition, thereby increasing their lifespan. “Why replace, if you can refinish / repair -- and return to service” We offer “original finishes or custom color changes” to give your Shutters a “facelift” for a fraction of replacement cost.
